How do I fold a MyTopo map correctly?

Instructions for folding a map.

First, locate the tic marks (the markings on the map that let you know where to make the folds)

  • For a large (48x36) map, the markings are every 4 inches on the 4 foot side (on both sides) and 9 inches on the 3 foot side (just on the title side)
  • For a medium (36x24) map, the markings are every 4 inches on the 3 foot side (on both sides) and 8 inches on the 2 foot side (just on the title side)
  • For a small (24x18) map, the markings are every 3 inches on the 2 foot side (on both sides) and 6 inches on the 18 inch side (just on the title side)

Second, place the map with the title towards you, face down.

Next, fold the edge of the map to the second tic mark and crease the new edge facing you. You should have the title side facing up and the first tic mark should be close to the edge of the fold. For large and medium maps the title fold will be about 4 inches and small maps will be 3 inches.

Then flip the entire map over and fold the map again to the next tic mark.

Continue to do this until you have reached the end of the map.

Finally, to make the last set of folds:

  • For a large (48x36) map, place the title area face up and fold the map in half over itself. Then for the top edge back over itself so that the title area is showing again. Flip the entire map over and fold the long end back over itself so that the title area is showing again.
  • For medium and small maps, place the map with the title from you face down. Fold the bottom edge of the map toward the top, about two thirds of the way (you should see one of the tic marks start to appear). Finally fold the top edge down back over itself so that the title of your map is showing.
